Obituary For ELLIS MAJOR MARTIN
Ellis Martin Jr.
October 23, 1943 – August 27, 2025
Ellis Martin Jr., a beloved father, dedicated public servant, and faithful man of God, passed away August 27, 2025.
Born on October 23, 1943, in Detroit, MI to Ellis Sr. and Maggie (Carver) Martin, Ellis grew up with strong family values and a deep sense of faith. He graduated from Cass Technical High School and at a young age devoted his life to the Lord. Ellis was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church, where he worshipped and served faithfully for more than 30 years.
Ellis married Michelle Martin, and together they raised three children: Saddi Mitchell Mary Martin, and Raymond Martin.
Ellis dedicated his life to service in many ways. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from the 1980s through the early 2000s, and he worked for the United States Postal Service for more than 30 years. Within his church community, Ellis gave generously of his time and talents, serving as a deacon, Trinity Park board member, and Chairman of the Fellowship Fund. He also volunteered as a teacher’s aide at a local school and was an active member of the Detroit Adams Butzel Complex Senior community, where he proudly participated in the Detroit Senior Olympics every year.
Outside of work and church, Ellis valued time with family and friends. In earlier years, he enjoyed family vacations, church gatherings, and holiday celebrations. He supported the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) and was a devoted fan of the Detroit Lions, Pistons, and Michigan State football. In later years, he found joy in staying active—whether swimming, biking, or competing in senior athletics—and in giving back through volunteer service.
Ellis will be remembered as a kind soul who always wore a smile and lived each day striving to serve the Lord.
Ellis was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Sr. and Margaret Martin, and his sister, Wilhelmina Covin. He is survived by his loving children: Saddi Mitchell, Mary Martin (Shawn) , Raymond Martin, grandchildren (Braeshsun, Jordan, Erin and Riley Jean) and a host of family, friends, and church members who will carry forward his legacy of love, faith, and service.
